Still no Google Voice love for Android users

Late last year (2013) Google announced that it would stop XMPP support for Google Voice on of May 15th of this year. For those of you unaware of what XMPP is, it allowed third party apps to access Google Voice and allowed users of that app that also had a Google Voice number to be able to make phone calls from Android devices. With support for XMPP having been dropped it meant those 3rd party apps no longer function with your Google Voice number.

This got plenty of Google Voice users who use Android panicking about what they were going to do to adapt and find other means of making calls.

Some of the those 3rd party apps developers were also panicking about how they would continue to provide a means for their users to make phone calls on their android devices. Some, like Talkatone, adapted quickly and switched their service from piggy backing on Google Voice to changing to a voip model. What did this mean for Talkatone users. You can continue to use Talkatone with two changes. One, you will get a new number from Talkatone. I need to read up on whether or not you can port your Google Voice number over to Talkatone.  But, I did read today online that doing so would involve a charge. Two, outbound calls cost 1 cent per minute at this time. There are also other VOIP apps that charge a similar rate for outbound calls.

But, what about Google Voice for Android? Why are we still waiting? Google Voice was integrated into the app for iOS a while back already. If you have a windows tablet or phone with full windows 8.1 you can still use Google Voice as you always have or with the Chrome hangouts app. Yet many months after the first decision to pull the plug on XMPP support Android users are still waiting. I ask again. Why are we still waiting?

I will continue to monitor the progress on finally getting Google Voice integrated into Google Hangouts. Hopefully I will have good news soon.

Android OS, Apps, and More page renamed and back for 2014

As you all know from the blog, Android OS, Apps, and More Google+ page was suspended for reasons that were never explained properly. At that point, admittedly a bit angry, I chose to stop adding content to the blog. It was over a month before I decided to start a new page and paired it with a community (Green Tech News/Discussion ). The content is not really android related for the most part. That was the other reason I stopped posting on this blog.

Fast forward almost a year and I have made a decision to start up this blog with a new name and an a broader scope. Apps, Tech News, Etc. will not only deal with Android content but, Chrome, iOS, and Windows 8 Apps as well. There will also be Tech News and a bit of others things I find of interest.

I plan to start doing reviews again of Apps. For now I will be doing mostly Android and Chrome app reviews as I don't have either an iOS device or Windows 8. Also, I will be adding news posts as well dealing with Tech content.

Keep an eye out as I should have my first post soon.

Google+ suspends Android OS, Apps, and More page.

It"s been about a month since Google+ suspended my Google+ page linked to this blog.  I spent more time on the page than the blog up until the point. Then the page got suspended and I stopped working on either because of be discouraged.

After fighting with google to get the page reinstated and now more than 2 weeks with no response, I have decided to just start over with another page.

I will keep this blog though for the moment.

Three Tips to Enjoy Pandora More.

Like many people, we here at Android OS, Apps, and More love music.

One of the most frequently used apps around is Pandora. It is a fantastic site for music fans of all ages. Streaming many different varieties of music genres gives you an almost unlimited music library from which to enjoy. I found only a few occasions where an artist name was inputted into the channel search that Pandora did not find anything. Given the wide range of genres I personally listen, that is saying a lot.

Even with this positive going for Pandora, there are ways to improve your listening experience to get more out of this great app.

3. Remember to Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down songs. There seem to be conflicting strategies when comes to using this feature. I have seen it suggested to use Thumbs Down frequently and Thumbs Up up only occasionally. I find that using that approach might not be the best idea. The theory is if you thumbs down a lot of songs in a specific channel that you will make sure to limit unwanted noise in that specific channel. And at first it may do that. But, if you thumbs down a song that you didn't want to hear at the particular time it will not be played again on that channel even though you might like to hear it at another time. My approach is only to Thumbs Down a song that I really dislike and never expect to want to hear ever. Because Pandora is very good about matching song styles of the station you start, I find I very seldom have to use the Thumbs Down button.

Using the Thumbs Up feature is something that sometimes gets overlooked. If relaxing and enjoying the music you tend to forget about liking songs because you are too busy just, well, relaxing and enjoying the music. Remember to take the time and like a song from time to time. This helps Pandora better tailor your music experience. Which is what the point of the whole thumbs up / thumbs down feature.

2. When listening to a particular station you will see an options menu. This gives you several things to do. Consider using the "People who also like this" selection. This will take you to a page showing other Pandora members who also like listen to the particular artist or genre of the station you have selected. If you click on a member name you will be taken to their page. On the member page you can click on the stations they have created or tracks they like. You may find doing this to be a treasure trove of new songs, artists or genre you might not have known about. After all, the person's page you clicked on already has one channel or artist in common with you. There is probably a good chance that they will know about an artist you may have yet to have come across that you will like as well.

1. Make your own Channels. This may seem to be like common sense to some. But there are people that will just pick a few of the already made genre stations and not consider doing anything else.

To me this really looks over the real power of Pandora. If you are going to just pick a few genre channels and never explore more then you are pretty much treating Pandora as a radio. Pandora was created so you can tailor your listening experience to suit your specific needs.

Now, I am not saying you should ignore genre stations. I have a few set up. Sometimes I am in the mood to listen to Smooth Jazz and am not really worried about any particular artist. On those occasions I will just cue up the Smooth Jazz Station and let it run. The things about the Smooth Jazz Station is that overwhelmingly the music is saxophone related. Don't get my wrong, I love saxophone music. But the Smooth Jazz Station, in my mind, should not just be almost exclusively saxophone music.

I just found that some of the genre specific stations offer too narrow a range of selections.  By creating my own stations I can more easily rotate between them creating a better variety. Say I have a station for Candy Dulfer (she is a saxophone player). I will hear songs by her and similar artists. If I create several other channels for other artists, say Chris Botti (trumpet player), Nestor Torres (Flute Player), etc, I can change stations at my discretion as my mood changes. This is much more flexible a way of doing things. With having the one Genre, smooth jazz in this case, I am less likely hear a broader range of music that still fit in the smooth jazz genre.

The other really useful thing about creating your own channels is the ability to cue up a single artist when you are in the mood to hear a song from them. At least the first song played when cued up is from the artist you name the channel for. At least that is my experience. The 2nd song usually is from an artist with a similar style of music. Just like genre channel. A little trick to use, if you want to hear several songs in a row from one particular artist, is to make several channels that have the same artist. Say you really like Lisa Stansfield. You  can create 3 separate channels with her name. Click on the first and it will usually play a song be here first. When it goes the next song, usually by another similar artist, you can click on one of the other two channels with her name and it will cue up another song by her. You can do it again with a third channel with the same name. You might even able to go back to the first channel and click it again and repeat. Not sure though as I haven't tried beyond 3 channels of the same name.

Bonus Tip: Some people may not be aware but, a subscription to Pandora is only $3.99 a month or 1 year for $36 US. If you really hate commercials that seems like a pretty small price to pay. Plus, if you have a truly unlimited phone data plan you can listen to it while driving (assuming you have bluetooth functionality in your car). If you are not really into talk radio and only use your Satellite Radio provider for music you could probably ditch them in favor of Pandora.

Game App Review: Sokoban Garden 3D

For those unfamiliar with Sokoban I will give you as brief explanation.

Sokoban translated means Warehouse Worker. In the original game you are presented with a 2d representation of a warehouse and several boxes. Those boxes are to be moved into spots in the warehouse which are clearly marked. You use the worker to move the boxes to the marked spots.

At first this may not seem like a big problem. That is until you find out that you are only allowed to push the boxes (one at a time only) not pull them. This little limitation is what makes the game such a challenge. One wrong push and the box in question becomes unmovable. The boxes themselves can prove to be obstacles to other boxes if you move them the wrong way. Sokoban can be likened to chess in that it requires you to think several moves ahead before you even actually move the first box.

If you have never tried Sokoban before I would suggest you do as it can be a quite enjoyable, if not frustrating at times, game to spend your leisure time playing.

Let's move on to the review.

For those familiar with the original Sokoban game you will likely notice several differences. Instead of a warehouse you are presented with a walled garden of sorts. A warehouse worker is replaced with a smiley faced lady bug. You are also given a 3D type of view instead of the flat two dimensional view with most other Sokoban games.

I really like the fact that you it has a 3d view as it lends depth to the graphical interface. Though the ladybug is certainly nicely constructed and the animations for it a fairly decent, I found most of the other graphics a bit to simple and blocky. I hope the developer has an update coming that will improve the overall quality of the graphics. This is just a minor issue in my mind as it does not affect the game play.

The only other issue I had with the game, and this is true of too many game apps I have downloaded, is the inability to turn off the game music with out also turning off the other game sounds as well. To me this should be an automatic thought of all game designers. It must dawn on them sometime while playing other people games that it would be nice to be able to turn off the music so they can enjoy the rest of the game.

Those two issue aside, I found the game quite enjoyable. This is a really good game that with only some minor tweaks would be even more fun.

Below is the link to the app so you can download it. If you enjoy the game please consider rating and making a short review of the game. I am sure the developer would enjoy the input.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 Launch Gets One Step Closer to Release

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 appears to have moved one step closer to reality. At least the Wifi version. Labeled with the model number GT-N5110, it made the requisite stop over that the FCC. Keep in mind that the model the FCC is scrutinizing is not referred to as the Note 8.0 device. We are still dealing with rumors. This is not atypical. But, all the leaked info points that direction. With the World Mobile Congress only one month away it is looking all the more likely that the Note 8.0 will be making an appearance as planned.

Just recently new photos if the device were also leaked. At least the photos are believed to be the new Note device. It is always best to take unconfirmed information with a grain of salt to a point.

Please keep in mind that the below photo has yet to be authenticated. There are several leaked photos. The snap shot below has appeared other blogs and websites.

There have also been specs floating around as well. Below are what is believed to be "preliminary" specs.

Weight: 330 Grams ( Just over 11 and a half ounces)

Dimensions: 136.3 x 211.3 x 7.95 millimeters.

OS: Android Jellybean 4.2

Processor: Quad Core

Ram: 2 GB

Storage: 16 GB

Audio: Stereo Speakers and 3.5 mm headphone jack

External Memory: Micro SD (likely support up to 32 GB card)

It is rumored that the device will be priced below the price of the Ipad mini. Somewhere in the $250 to $300 range in US dollars.

The 3G and LTE varients will likely be more expensive. Though no clear confirmation for them has appeared.

As was noted earlier in this article, the device is expected to show up at the World Mobile Congress.

App Review: iQuarium

iQuarium is an app that was first introduced for Apple devices. The main purpose of the app is for you to have an aquarium that you can carry around in your pocket. This is what the developers claim.

You start of with an empty tank. First you are given one Parrot Fish. He will immediately go about swimming around just like a real fish. If you tap on the tank air bubbles will appear and the fish will vary his reactions to the the tapping. Sometimes he will move toward the bubbles and other times he will run from the direction they are coming.

Shortly after you get your fish you will get a 2nd item to add tou your tank. Gravel. After the gravel you will get a 3rd item. A plant.

If you click on the upper right icon you can feed your fish.

After the first 3 items you will be given the opportunity to wait just about 24 hours until the next decoration will be come available for use or you can opt to purchase points towards the next item. You are also given the option to get free points by signing up for services or downloading other apps. If you chose to just wait the 24 hours for the next item you earn 6 points per hour. The next item costs 140 points so you actually earn enough points for the next item just under 24 hours.

On to the review.

As you can see from the picture below the graphics are quite impressive. The Parrot fish is not a cartoon rendering but and actually fish. Likely what the developers did was to record a real parrot fish in a tank in front of a green screen capturing it's movement. The bubbles have realistic movement as well. The plant, which is one of the first 3 decorations, evens waves with the movement of the water. The app definitely gets 5 stars in the realism department.

Unfortunately, the app has several technical issues that really should be addressed. Plus some less technical issues that could be done different.

The first is sound. Whenever you touch the screen there is a knocking sound. That sound happens pretty much every time you tap on the screen unless you are moving around objects. The objects can only be moved side to side. The cannot be moved forward and backward. The rock can be moved in front of the plant but not the other way around. Likely the other objects that become available will be the same. Some objects will be able to be placed in front of others and other objects will be behind other some.

The first technical issue comes after you set the 3rd item. You are told that it will be several hours before the next item is available when in reality it is almost 24 hours before that 4th item is available. Now, you could purchase the item. As I mentioned earlier you can buy points. For $0.99 you can buy 5000 points which will let you buy several items. I am not sure how many as prices for items may very. The 4th and 5th items cost 140 points each.

Which brings up another technical issue. There are several dozen or more services you can sign up for and apps you can download and play to earn points. Ever single one I tried, and I tried at least a dozen, didn't work. So, essentially, you either pay for points or wait 24 hours for a new item to become available.

One other technical issue is the bubbles don't make a sound. Perhaps this is an issue with compatibility with the device the was used to test the app. However, the knocking sound is quite clear.

Lastly, you only get 2 fish. Both are parrot fish. I would have liked to see more varieties of fish available and more than just 2.

As I mentioned in the beginning. the graphics are quite impressive and deserve a 5 star rating. However, all the technical issues. lack of interactivity, and only having one type of fish lowers that rating significantly.

Google Play Store Rating: 4.5
AOAM Rating:                 2.9

Now if you want a less interactive more passive aquarium experience this app may be for you. Something you can spend a little time with watching your fish swim around. Something you can add decorations to make it homey for the fish. It certainly will fill that requirement to a t. Nothing at all wrong with that if it is what you want.

Below is the link to the Google Play page so you can download it and check the app out.

I hope you enjoy the app. Please take the time to share via Google+, Twitter, and/or Facebook. The option to do so it at the top left of the blog.
